2009 LUX Prize Award Ceremony - 25 November: Which Film will get the EP Film Prize support for 23 languages subtitling and EU-wide distribution?

On Wednesday 25 November the EP President Jerzy Buzek will award the third LUX Prize for the European Cinema. The 87,000 euro prize will finance the subtitling of the winning film in the 23 official EU languages and the producing of a 35 mm print per Member State, making it more accessible to viewers throughout the EU.

Lux Prize 2009 Trophy

The three films in contention were chosen from the 2009 Official Selection by a panel of 17 cinema professionals and unveiled in September under the auspices of the 66th Venice Film Festival. Kamen Kalev’s Eastern Plays, Hans-Christian Schmid’s Sturm and Philippe Lioret’s Welcome, allow the EP to present three remarkable contemporary films which invite us as Europeans to reflect on our shared values and recent history.

During the 2009 competition (3-20 November), Members of the European Parliament have been invited in daily screenings to watch the films and cast their winning film’s list through an electronic vote, which will close at 23:00 on 24 November.

On the following day, 25 November, the President Buzek will award the 2009 LUX Prize to the films which will have received the most votes from the MEPs. The outcome of the vote will remain undisclosed until the Award Ceremony, at 11:45 in the hemicycle of Strasbourg. A press conference with the director and team of the winning film will follow, at 15:00.
